Our Goal...

The Cornucopia Foundation is dedicated to helping the environment
by educating the public in ways to preserve our precious earth.

We have been presented with an extraordinary opportunity to use over one acre of land in back of the Malibu High School
property as an environmental learning center. Our expectation for this land is to have a Yurt which will serve a dual purpose.
It will be used as a classroom for the children and a place to hold conferences/seminars for adults.

On the property there will be water/solar conservation devices with the latest technology and an approximate
10x10 Straw Bale library of environmental books.
The children will be actively involved in growing and
harvesting their own fruits and vegetables. The property will be managed consistent with permaculture..

The property has the advantage of being located next to the Juan Cabrillo Elementary School and the Boys and Girls Club.
The Center will provide access for children of all ages and their parents. It gives us the opportunity to teach the importance of wetlands,
composting, recycling, pollution prevention, restoring the earth through permaculture, etc.. The Cornucopia Foundation
believes it is important to inform children at an early age of the need for environmental preservation.

In order for this land to flourish and grow and enable us to supply the necessary educational material needed, the Cornucopia Foundation
needs your financial support. Please join us in protecting our environment. Remember, the future of our planet is not by chance – it is by choice!

YURT
Help Make Our Dreams Come True…..

The Yurt is a modern adaptation of the ancient shelter used by Central Asian nomads for centuries. The compact shape of the yurt and combination
of lightweight members in tension and compression mean that the structure is highly effective in maximizing strength while minimizing the use of materials.

The Yurt is a lightweight, low-cost, state-of-the-art structure that delivers structural integrity, longevity, and low maintenance
demanded by modern users. The Yurt is strong and weather-tight.
The Yurt is a circular structure that consists of a durable fabric cover,
tension band, and wood frame that includes a lattice wall, radial rafters, central compression ring, and a framed door.

Cornucopia is looking for sponsors to help make this possible for our organization. We are looking to use
the Yurt as a classroom for our children, and as a venue for seminars for the adults in our community. We are asking for
donors to help make this happen. We will advertise the donor’s logo on the outside of the Yurt, as you will be making
a difference in many of our community’s lives. We need to raise approximately $12,000 to make this happen.
Anything that you can do to help will be greatly appreciated.

FINAL PRODUCT OF STRAW-BALE CONSTRUCTION

Straw Bale Structures

Straw Bale housing provides comfortable, attractive, functional, and durable housing, at a fraction of the price of a conventional home.
The cost of a home includes materials, construction, financing, taxes, and energy consumption. Straw Bale structures are resource-efficient
and energy-conserving, and do not sacrifice affordability and quality.

Straw-bale building is a practical and an under-utilized construction method. Walls of straw, easily constructed and structurally sound,
promise to take some of the pressure off of limited forest resources.

Straw is a viable building alternative, plentiful, and inexpensive. Straw-bale buildings are super-insulated, have simple construction, low costs,
and the conversion of an agricultural byproduct into a valued building material. The straw-bale walls, stucco exterior and plaster interior
remain water proof, fire resistant, and pest free. Limited skill is required, so a community house-raising effort can build most of a straw-bale
house in a single day. This effort yields a low-cost and energy-efficient space for the user.

Cornucopia is planning on conducting a straw-bale workshop to construct one of these structures.
Cornucopia will use this structure as a library, for the children’s project program.
