RANDY OLSON
Randy Olson is a scientist-turned-filmmaker who has worked locally in the Malibu area communicating ocean conservation issues through his Shifting Baselines Ocean Media Project. In 2009 he teamed up with Heal the Bay and Surfrider to create the "MPAs Work" communication project for which he directed a Public Service Announcement starring Pierce Brosnan, John C. McGinley, Gabrielle Reece, and other local celebrities. As a filmmaker he attended the U.S.C. Cinema School and is the writer-director of the feature films "Flock of Dodos: the Evolution-Intelligent Design Circus" (Tribeca '06, Showtime) and "Sizzle: A Global Warming Comedy" (Outfest '08). In 2009 Island Press published his book, "Don't Be Such a Scientist: Talking Substance in an Age of Style" which has established him as a communications consultant with science-based organizations including NASA, CDC, and NIH. Previous to becoming a filmmaker he was a marine biologist (Ph.D. Harvard University, Biology) and a tenured professor at the University of New Hampshire. He is currently an adjunct faculty member with the U.S.C. Wrigley Institute of Environmental Studies and has a production office at Raleigh Studios.
