All of Cornucopia’s programs and goals are aimed at developing Sustainability and understanding our role as humans, as an integral part of the success of this concept.
The challenge is to change our current “Cradle to Grave” mentality of over-consuming and then throwing things away, to a“Cradle to Cradle” mindset and behavior, which is the Planet’s model for sustaining all its life-supporting natural systems. In Nature, the death of one organism becomes the food for another, and the cycle continues through time.
“Sustainability means that each generation of humans passes on to the next generation, resources (such as forests and minerals, fish and wildlife, farmland and topsoil, and natural landscapes and environmental quality ( such as pure water, clean air, healthy ecosystems and livable communities) that are undiminished and, as much as possible, enhanced, so they can be maintained indefinitely from generation to generation.” British Columbia’s Strategy for Sustainability
We also believe that these sustainable goals are best taught in natural settings with Nature itself as teacher. The Environmental Learning Center, located behind Malibu High School will initially focus on After School Programs and Summer Programs.
Besides our own Environmental Program we hope to encourage teachers to include activities such as "Shakespeare in the Park" and having teachers of Art, Music, History and Math utilize this lovely site. It is our hope that in working with the Child Development Program Services, this site will be available to classes all over the district.
The programs will combine elements of three award-winning curricula. And, of course, as in any sustainable system, will evolve over time. Adult seminars and eco-tours have already taken place intermittently at other locations, and will be expanded in the future.
We hope you will come visit and support Cornucopia, if possible, financially or as a volunteer.
